Breaking out...

Here it is...

Little Pocohontas

We finally succumbed to Netflix...I had so many friends in Jackson who said they loved it, but I never wanted to deal with going to the PO Box just to get a movie. And there's this really cool looking independent movie rental place right around the corner from us...which I really DO want to support, but my girls...they just don't like leaving the house very much...soooo...here we are.

We watched Pocohontas (both one and two, if you must ask) and Vivian wanted me to make her a Pocohontas dress. Now, I can sew...but from scratch, I figured she'd be over it by the time I finished it...so we modified a dress that was in the dress-up box...cut off one sleeve, and sewed one shut. Fortunatley it already had a stretchy neck in place...She's pretty pleased with it.


She's also going through this phase (please, it must be a phase...) of drawing on her face...with pens, markers, whatever...


And here she is making...soup. What else could it be?

Christmas dinner...

The girls and I went to New Seasons (the grocery store 2 blocks away) and got 3 Dungeness Crabs (it's crab season...for some reason I'm reminded of Elk Season, but I think Crab wins, hands down...). The woman at the counter, Dana, asked if I wanted her to prep them (are you kidding, free kitchen help? Hell yes!) we watched, and the girls asked lots of questions. Vivian was most concerned that the crabs would pinch her, but Dana assured her that they were indeed, dead. She even showed the girls the heart of one of them (did you know a Dungeness Crab heart is about 1" and shaped like a star? I didn't either...).

The remains...I think I'm going to try making a stock out of them. We're having crab cakes tonight as we had about 1.5 cups of leftover crab. Bret did the dirty work of getting the rest of the meat out while I watched Prince Caspian with the girls the second time that day -- he watched it the first time. It's the 2nd in the Narinia series -- just found out Disney is bailing on the 3rd movie...not enough $ to be made, apparently, so they're looking for other backers...anyone? Great movie, we've also enjoyed the first one -- read the book aloud to Sabine first, and she wanted to see the movie...thought it would be too scary, but no.

Barbie-mania

I found five Barbies at the kids consignment store in Idaho Falls a couple of trips ago...didn't realize it at the time that one of them was a surfer Barbie (Bret loved that one...) then found a giant bag-o-Barbie clothes (a lot of them crocheted...) at another second hand store...SCORE! To try to alleviate fighting, we gave them to BOTH the girls on Sabine's birthday morning. They were pretty psyched.

On a side note, the girls have become fans of the Barbie movies, and I have to say they're actually pretty good (aside from the sometimes strange animation and the fact that it looks like they've re-used several of the characters in different movies...). Barbie is shown as a strong, independent, smart young woman...better than a lot of the characters in grown up movies...and many "kids" tv shows. And the music is usually pretty good. So there.
